How to create accessible office documents

  • MS Office has a built in accessibility checker. This will highlight issues in your documents that need to be addressed to meet AA accessibility standards.
  • Include alt text for all visuals. We have a full guide on alt text available on this site.  
  • Hyperlinks should be meaningful. Do not use 'click here' or 'find out more'. Instead your link should convey clear, concise information about the destination.
  • Do not use colour as the only means of conveying information. 
  • Use sufficient contrast for text and background colours. A good contrast checker can be found on the site. 
  • Use built-in headings, particularly in MS Word.
